Information Letter no. 32-2007

Dear Member Federations,

With great sadness we have to inform you of the death of Mrs. Ellen Mueller-Preis, who died on Sunday, 18th November 2008, 95 years old.

One of the “Grand Dame of Fencing” was the only Austrian Olympic medallist who won the gold medal at the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. 1936 in Berlin and 1948 in London she captured also bronze medals and was three times world champion in 1947, 1949, and 1950. At the age of 44 years she still reached the final at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne.

We still remember her visiting the Olympic Games in Athens and the world champion-ships 2005 in Leipzig.

Ellen Mueller-Preis was borne on 6th May 1912 in Berlin but moved 1930 to Vienna. After her sports career she worked as professor at Vienna theatres and taught many famous actors the art of stage fencing. She also kept contact to the Austrian sports scene and to many of her students.

The European Fencing Confederation sends its deepest sympathy and condolences to the Austrian Fencing Federation.
