The 3rd and the last day of the fencing event in Lignano-Sabbiadoro saw women’s sabre and men’s épée on the strips.
While in sabre we only witnessed a few good matches, épée was the overall strongest event – and a day of the Ukrainian brothers Sokolov and their team-mates; the medal documentation shows their strength in this weapon, and we will certainly see similar results at the upcoming Veterans World Championships in Porec (CRO).
The acceptance of fencers from the USA did not harm at all the participants, and maybe at the next games 2015 in France it could be repeated, encouraging also other continents to come to Europe.
As many registered fencers did not show up at the last moment, the total participation dropped to nearly 160 fencers – but the DT managed to give a lot of fencing to all fencers which was highly appreciated.
Refereeing was secured by internationally known referees and did not have any complaints or protests.
We now look forward to the next Masters Games and hope that France will do everything to include fencing again.
