Competition day 3 of the European Fencing U23 Championships determined winners and medalists in men’s foil and women’s epee.
Yesterday we often heard participants speculating on how difficult for them it was to fence compatriots from the psychological viewpoint. The sport fortune seemed to have ignored their praying, and this day again it proceeded to set teammates at loggerheads in both weapons.
In women’s epee, Ewa Nelip from Poland took a good start in the prelims. On her way to the podium she snatched the wins over two Russians – Yana Zvereva (15:14) and Vlada Vlasova (15:13), and then outplayed her teammate Katarzyna Dabrowa (15:8), qualifying to the semi. Dagmar Baranikova from Slovakia did not manage to find an argument to stop her, loosing 6:15.

The second finalist Violetta Kolobova from Russia defeated Dominika Mosler from Poland - 15:10, then her compatriot Tatjana Andryushina (15:13) and Estonian Yuliya Beljajeva (15:11). She secured a confident win over Brenda Briasco from Italy (15:12) one step before the final to follow the same script in the golden match. No chances for Ewa Nelip – 15:10 in favor of the Russian. In this way Kolobova collected the third Russian gold on competition Day 3 of the European U23 Championships in Kazan.
In men’s foil final, Tommaso Lari met Sergei Byk from Belarus.
In course of the prelims, Lari knocked out German Andre Sanita (15:12), Russian Roman Kuts (15:9) and, according to the tradition, his teammate Alessio Foconi (15:14). His Belarus opponent secured confident wins over Dmitry Komissarov from Russia (15:12), Daniele Garozzo (15:10) and one more Russian Timur Safin (15:10). However, he didn’t manage to single out the remedy against Lari, and lost to him in the final (6:15). As a result, Italy won the first top probe medal at the Fencing U23 Euro in Kazan.
Team events in three weapons will start tomorrow, on 30May. Prelims in epee men team, sabre and foil women team are scheduled to start at 09.00 a.m., 01.00 and 02.00 p.m. local time. Finals will take their start at 02.00, 05.00 and 07.00 p.m. respectively.
