The Russians keep on dominating the EU23 fencing championship in Kazan winning three more gold medals on the 4th day of the event.
Epee fencers were the first to play out medals in team events on competition Day 4 of the European U23 Championships in Kazan. Prelims brought no real surprises. Team Poland nailed a win over Germany by one hit (45:44), Hungarians defeated Ukraine (45:40), and Italians outplayed Belarus (45:28). Russian and Italian fencers met no problems in semi-finals against Poland (45:32) and Hungary (43:40). An hour later Poland won bronze in the consoling final, challenging Hungary (45:40). Russians celebrated one more win at home: Italy got contented with silver, suffering defeat at 39:45.
Competitions in women’s sabre turned to be very dynamic. In prelims, Hungarian and Azeri fencers outplayed teams Italy (45:29) and Belarus (45:40). Polish and Russian squads had the privilege to commence their way to the podium in the semis, and it had nothing to do with a surprise, that they both succeeded quite well there, knocking out Hungarians (45:33) and Azerbaijan (45:39) respectively. The match for the bronze depicted the all-round advantage of Azeri fencers - 45:33. Russia defeated Poland by 5 hits (45:40) and won gold.
Competitions in team women’s foil opened with the clash Ukraine vs Poland. Ukraine had no problems defeating their opponents ( 43:30). Hungarians didn’t manage to find the remedy against Italians (45:26), which in their turn lost to Germans one round later, in semi-final – 33:45.
Russians together with Germany, started competing for the podium in the semis. To begin with, the hosts secured an easy win over Poland (45:36) and they proceeded, outplaying Germany in the final – 45:18.To put it mildly, Germans had no chances to stop Russians on their way to the gold. Poland and Italy met to play out the consolation final. Polish felt happy to award bronze – 45:23.
