Competition Day 5 of the European U23 Championships played out the last three sets of medals in women’s epee, men’s sabre and men’s foil.
Competitions in women’s epee started with no significant surprises. Estonia, Italy and Russia knocked out Sweden, Hungary and Germany. In the semis, Polish and Russian squads defeated Estonians (45:36) and Italians (45:18) and met in the final to play out the title. The gold match turned to an intense contest, where the luck rescued the hosts, who managed to nail the win over Poland just by one hit – 34:33. One more gold for the team Russia, whence the bronze went to the team Italy, defeating Estonia in the match of a similar character – 43:42.
In men sabre, Italians, Belarus and Azeri fencers defeated Poland, Georgia and Hungary to award their pass to the semis. The Slavs went on dominating: the Russian squad had no problems against Polish (45:37), Belarus followed the same script against Azerbaijan (45:32).
In the end, Poland collected bronze, winning the Azeru sabre fencers in the consolation final – 45:39, while Russians secured a confident win over Belarus - 45:31 and won the fifth gold in a row in the team events.
Foil fencers squads played out the last set of medals at the U23 Euro-2011 in Kazan. The first time for the recent two days, the gold went abroad of Russia.
Favourites proved their strength in the prelims. Belarus defeated Hungary – 45:42, Germany outplayed Austria – 45:39, while Russians knocked out Poland – 45:35. Italy and Russia went on their winning pace, defeating Hungary (45:28) and Germany (45:32) in the semi-finals. To make the long story short, Italian men foil squad became the only team to defeat the hosts in the final – 45:35. Russians took silver, while the bronze went to the team Germany, outplaying Hungary in the consolation final – 45:31.
