Vezzali, Valentina Yakimenko, AlexeyLeipzig has got its first European champions – Italy and Russia went for gold in the European Fencing Championships in the Saxony city.
At first Valentina Vezzali – the defending champion who is very well known in Leipzig won her final in female individual foil against Eugyenia Lamonova from Russia with 15:08. Leipzig must be one of the favorite cities of the 36 year old mother – 5 years ago she won the world championships in the Leipzig arena, too.
The second European champion comes from Russia. In a very exciting match Alexey Yakimenko beat the German world champion Nicolas Limbach in men's individual sabre with 15:13. Although the audience in the Leipzig Arena was on the side of the German, Yakimenko did a great and very calm job. The leader in world ranking and second placed Limbach was a little bit disappointed: "I lost my match in the first half. Yakimenko led with 8:3. After that I catched up, but it was too late. But all in all it was a good day for me and I'm happy."
