Poland won the first gold medal in Leipzig. The women’s epee team with Ewa Nelip, Magdalena Piekarska,  Malgorzata Stroka and  Danuta Dmowska-Andrzejuk defeated Italy with Mara Navarria, Nathalie Moellhausen, Bianca Del Carretto and Francesca  Quondamcarlo with 35:30. It was a very close match and the ninth duel between Moellhausen and Piekarska had to bring the decision, because after 8 duels the score was balanced 25:25. Then Piekarska started much better and defeated Moellhausen 10:5. So Italy had to be content with the second place.

Poland could celebrate the bronze medal with a victory over  Germany(45:35). Laura Flessel-Colovic, Hajnalka Kiraly-Picot, Mareen Nisima and Nathalie Alibert made sure that Olympic Champion Britta Heidemann, European Individual Champion Imke Duplitzer, Monika Sozanszka and Ricarda Multerer  did the same disappointing result than last year in Plovdiv.

Defending champion Romania retired against France in the quarter finals (40:44).
