The first medal competitions at the world fencing championship took place october 12th.

After a furious battles in the qualification days the first bouts for the medal places took place in Palaghiaccio arena in Catania.

The first two events to show their champions were men's saber and women's foil. Both of these competitions were dominated by the Italian fencers tooking both gold medals of the day. However one more incredible thing is worth mentioning. Valentina Vezzali took her sixth title of world champion confirming her position in the fencing hall of fame. Additional surprise of the day brought the young American fencer Lee Kiefer (1994) who manage to defeat many experienced fencers loosing with the later champion Valentina Vezzali 15:10 leaving her with bronze medal. The final was, as usually nowadays, between the two Italians Vezzali and Di Francisca.
