Two competitions on Tuesday, two Italian victors, two old and new European Champions – both the men’s sabre team and the women’s foil team defended their title during the European Fencing Championship in Leipzig. And the most successfull Italian fencer of the last years, Valentina Vezzali, promised much more: “We proved that our whole team is in a very good shape. I’m very happy to win with the team as well as the individual title. That’s a good starting position for the World Championships in Paris and next year for the qualification of the Olympic Games”.

The men’s sabre team of Italy was very relaxed during and after the competition. “I need music to fence not too aggressive. And  so I did a good competition”, said Luigi Samele, gold medalist with the sabre team.  And one of his opponent from Ukraine,  Oleg Shturbabin, had to admit that his team had no chance in the final: “The Italian team was too strong for us that day. They did a very competent competition.”
