Lucenay, Jean-Michel Kormilitsyna, SvetlanaHe heard the national anthem of France a lot of times during official medal ceremonies – for example at the Olympic Games 2008 or at the World Championships 2002 and 2008. But the first time they played the anthem only for him and not for the complete Franch team. Jean-Michel Lucenay won his first European title in men’s individual epee competition. “It was a new overwhelming experience and a very good day for me. The final was hard and the day very long, but I am so happy!”
Second placed Gabor Boczko attested his opponent a very good performance, too. “It was a tough match and I felt that it would be possible to win. But I missed this unique point to compensate the score. And Jean-Michel did it better!”
The winner of the gold medal in women’s individual sabre, Svetlana Kormilitsyna from Russia, was also very happy. “That’s great – I can’t believe it. Perhaps tomorrow I will understand what I’ve done”. Her country woman Sophia Velikaia took the silver medal as a stimulation and promised more: “ Svetlana was the better fencer today but I will learn from my mistakes and I want to win gold at the World Championships in Paris”.
