World Champion Hungary is also the best team of Europe in men’s epee competition. During the European Fencing Championships in Leipzig Geza Imre, individual silver medalist Gabor Boczko, Peter Somfai and Tamas Padar beat Ukraine (Karuchenko, Khvorost, Nikishin, Reyzlin) in the final 45:39 . It’s the first and unique title for Hungary at the tournament.
Also there was a nice closing for host country Germany. Martin Schmitt, Jörg Fiedler, Christoph Kneip and Steffen Launer won the bronze medal and therefore the sixth medal for Germany in a very close match against neighboring country Switzerland (35:34).
Therefore the most successful team of the European Fencing Championships is Italy. The Italian team won five gold, two silver and three bronze medals followed by Russia with two European titles. Germany is on third place.
