Nikolay Ivanov Mateev has been involved in fencing for more than 40 years, most of the time at an international level. He started fencing at the age of 11 years, and during his active fencing career Nikolay Mateev achieved a wide range of very high results.

In 1991 Nikolay Mateev moved to Iceland and took up the challenge of building up his sport in Iceland.
