DEATH OF RENÉ ROCH, FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE FIE
Sad news for the fencing family. News from IOC.
The European Fencing Confederation would like to extend our sincerest condolences to his family, friends and to the
French Fencing Federation. We offer them our most heartfelt sympathy and prayers during this difficult period.
René Roch was President of the International Fencing Federation (FIE) from 1992 to 2008. He was awarded the Olympic Order in 2009.
“I am deeply saddened to learn that René Roch has passed away. My thoughts go to his children and grandchildren, of whom he was extremely proud,” said IOC President Thomas Bach. “In his 16 years as President of the International Fencing Federation he was always a forward-looking, visionary sports leader. He was an early fighter for gender equality. Since the 1999 World Championships, all fencing disciplines have been open to men and women. When fencing risked being taken off the Olympic Games programme many years ago, he modernised the sport and its presentation. We will miss his smile and positive energy and I will miss a very good friend within the fencing family.”
