DOUBLE CADET EPEE GOLD FOR POLAND
World Championships 2021 Report – Day 8 Cadet Epee
Poland’s Alicja Klasik and Antoni Socha made the last individual day at the 2021 Cadet World Championships a good one for Poland, taking gold in the women’s and men’s events, respectively.
In the women’s event, Alicja Klasik, who finished ninth in the Junior individual yesterday began strongly, winning all of her first round matches and ranking second for the elimination stages. She wasn’t taken into double figures on route to the quarterfinals where she beat Kang Jihyun of Korea 15-10. She then came through a tough semi-final against American Ketki Ketkar 15-14. Number nine seed, Ekaterina Kobeneva of Russia was her opponent in the gold medal match but Klasik took the World Championship title with a 15-12 victory. Susanne Lannes of Estonia shared third place with Ketkar.
On the men’s side of the draw Antoni Socha dropped one fight in the first round, ranking 13th for the knockout stages. His route to the gold medal match was by no means easy being taken close by Daniel Ojeda Buitrago of Costa Rica (15-13), Bulgaria’s Rahim Rashaida (15-14) and Kim Dowan of Korea 15-13. He faced Russia’s Artem Sarkisyan for the World title who had also battled his way to the final. The final lived up to expectations with both Socha and Sarkisyan trading the lead but it was the Polish fencer that prevailed, winning 15-13. Kim shared the bronze medal position with Skyler Liverant of the USA.
Tomorrow is the final day of the Championships and will feature the Junior men’s and women’s team events.
