FIE ISSUES UPDATE ON 2019-2020 CALENDAR AND TOKYO 2020 QUALIFICATION
Today, the FIE has issued a letter to the Presidents of all National Fencing Federations with a statement about how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected the international event calendar. The letter also outlines how the FIE intends to move forward with qualification for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
In view of the global situation with regard to Covid-19, it was decided to cancel all competitions scheduled for April, May and June 2020, also in accordance with the recommendations of the FIE Medical Commission.
Qualifications for the Tokyo Olympic Games
The results and qualifications obtained until March 2020 are retained. The rankings are “frozen” and will be reactivated once we will be able to hold the last following events, counting for the Olympic qualification and which had been postponed:
Men’s and Women’s Foil Grand Prix Women’s Sabre World Cup
Men’s Epée World Cup
Men's Sabre World Cup
Women’s Epée World Cup
The events above, followed by the four zonal qualifying events, will be held when:
The global health situation will be safe
Fair and adequate training and preparation of athletes can take place
No federations will be prevented from participation
International competitions, including several “preparatory” World Cup/Grand Prix competitions, have taken place beforehand.
To achieve this, the FIE will consult the Confederations, the FIE Medical and Athletes Commissions and the FIE Coaches Council. In addition, organising federations will be contacted as soon as the situation will allow a proper planning.
