Germany impress in the semi-finals put France too good in the final
Today, France claimed gold at the European Fencing Championships in Dusseldorf, Germany, beating the host nation 45-26 in a one-sided final. A massive third place play-off between Russia and Italy was unexpected but the Italians took that match 45-36 to take the bronze medal.
Top seeds Italy had a bye through the first round before beating Ukraine comfortably 45-28 to make the semi-finals. In contrast, their semi-final opponents Germany had to battle past Spain, 45-38 and Poland 45-39 to get to the top four. Germany had a great start in the semi-final against the Italians and delighted the home crowd by seeing it through to win 45-40.
The other half of the draw was also full of drama. It was no surprise to see France and Russia contesting the semi-final but the French team were exceptionally strong in that match, winning 45-29.
They continued that form into the final, overwhelming the hosts 45-26 to take the gold medal. Germany, however will be delighted with the silver medal at their home event, especially given the importance of Olympic qualification. France will be in confident mood, come the World Championships in just a few weeks.
The event continues tomorrow with the start of the team competitions in women’s foil and men’s epee.
