MEN’S TEAM FOIL REPORT

Italy, the number two seeded team, claimed the Men’s Team Foil gold on day five of the European Fencing Championships in Antalya, Turkey.

Guillaume Bianchi, Alessio Foconi, Danielle Garozzo and Tomasso Marini, were the team to beat but made light work of their progress to the final. They defeated Turkey 45-14, Great Britain 45-33 and Spain 45-19 to give themselves the opportunity to go for gold in the final.

France came through the top of the draw beating neighbours Belgium 45-37 and Poland 42-36 on time to make the gold medal match.

Poland (Lesek Rajski, Andzej Rzadkowski, Michal Siess and Adrian Wojykowiak) faced Spain (Ignacio Breteau, Santiago Garcia Pardo, Roger Garcia-Alzorriz and Carlos Llavador) in the bronze medal match. The Poles claimed their podium spot with ease winning 45-29.

Bianchi held the bench in the final for Italy as France fielded Maximilien Chastenet, Alexandre Ediri and Pierre Loisel with Alexandre Sido in reserve. Italy stormed ahead to lead 15-5 after three legs and 30-19 with three bouts to go. Loisel came on for the anchor leg for France and despite an amazing twelve hit run, could not stop Italy from grabbing the European title 45-38.

The event continues with team events for Men’s Epee and Women’s Sabre on day five of the Championships. The full schedule is available here.
