MEN’S TEAM EPEE REPORT

Italy took the Men’s Team Epee gold medal on the last day of the European Championships.

Ranked fifth, Italy lined up with Gabriele Cimini, Davide De Veroli, Andrea Santarelli and Federico Vismara. They beat the Czech Republic 45-34 and Switzerland 45-41 to make the semi-finals. They then faced top seeds France and came through an incredibly tight match 45-44 to make the gold medal match.

In the other half of the draw, tenth seeds Israel – Grigori Beskin, Yonatan Cohen, Yuval Freilich and Ido Harper – surprised second seeds Ukraine, winning 45-33 before beating Denmark 45-44 to make the final.

Losing semi-finalists, France (Alexandre Bardenet, Yannick Borel, Romain Cannone and Alex Fava) and Denmark (Patrick Jorgensen, Kenneth Knudsen, Conrad Kongstad and Federick Von Der Osten) faced each other in the bronze medal play-off. France prevailed after a tight encounter 45-41.

Italy eased to a first third lead of 13-7 against Israel in the final and pulled away in the middle of the match to lead 30-18. Israel staged a mini-rival towards the end of the match but Italy claimed the continental title with a 45-32 victory.
