JEAN JOSEPH & KHAERTDINOVA STRIKE GOLD IN CAIRO
World Championships 2021 Report – Day 7 Junior Epee
Kendrick Jean Joseph of France and Russia’s Polina Khaertdinova fought their way to World Championship titles on the first Epee day in Cairo, Egypt.
Khaertdinova dropped a fight in the first round of the Junior women’s epee event and was ranked 16th for the elimination stages. She overcame the number one seed, Alicja Klasik of Poland 15-14 in the round of sixteen before beating Korea’s Kim Sohui by the same score in the semi-finals. A fine performance in the final saw her defeat American Jessica Lin 15-12 for the title. Ukraine’s Anastasiia Zelentsova shared third place with Kim.
In the men’s event, Jean Joseph also lost one of his first round matches which meant he was ranked 31st for the knockout stages. He impressed beating the Swiss number two seed Ian Hauri of Switzerland 15-14 and number seven seed Hadrien Favre – also from Switzerland – 15-13, on his way to the medal matches. He then edged the host nation’s Mohamed Elsayed 12-11 to make the final where he beat another Egyptian, Mohamed Yasseen 15-13 to claim the World title. Austria’s Samuel Berktold shared the bronze medal position with Elsayed.
The Championships continue tomorrow with the Cadet epee events.
