KIRILL WINS BATTLE OF THE TWINS FOR EUROPEAN TITLE
Kirill Beats Twin Brother Anton for Junior Men’s Foil Crown
Russia’s Kirill Borodachev claimed the Junior Men’s Foil title today in Porec beating his twin brother Anton in the final. The pair had previously met in the final of the 2016 Cadet European final in Novi Sad where Kirill also claimed gold but this was a much closer battle.
Despite being ranked only fifth in Europe, Kirill was one of the favourites in the field, along with his brother. He stormed through the ranking round, winning all of his matches to be ranked number four for the elimination stages. A bye through the round of 64 was followed by victories over Uniyal (SWE) 15-10, Tkach (UKR) 15-4 and Giacon (NED) 15-5 on his way to the semi-finals. Maciej Bem (POL) was his next opponent. The Polish fencer had shown great form throughout the day but was no match for Borodachev in their match. The Russian displayed his dominance by taking the victory 15-4 inside the first period.
In the other half of the draw, the other half of the twins, Anton, was also in imperious form. He was also unbeaten in the ranking round and seeded seventh for the eliminator. He knocked out the Cadet Champion, Szemes (HUN) 15-10 and Europe’s number ten fencer, Tomasso Marini (ITA) 15-6 on his way to the top four. He faced Marek Totusek (CZE) in the semi-finals and despite a slightly harder match than his brother, Anton comfortably progressed 15-9.
Often when teammates face each other at the latter stages of a tournament the encounter can be flat and messy. Here we had twin brothers against each other adding another layer of psychological demons. However, what followed was a truly competitive battle. Kirill was the more attacking fencer at the start but Anton turned the tables in the second half of the first period. At the break Kirill had the mini-advantage, leading 11-9.
In the second period Anton was more aggressive and drew level at 12-12. In the end Kirill settled the match with two exquisite attacks to take the title 15-13. The pair will be in action again for the team event and will form a formidable outfit with Mylnikov -especially given that all three are vying for places on the Russian Olympic team for Tokyo 2020.
