MENTORS LEAD SECOND FOIL SEMINAR
EFC ONLINE REFEREE EDUCATION SUPPORTED BY MADR & GHEORGHE
Today, the European Fencing Confederation (EFC) continued its series of foil referee education seminars to prepare the latest cohort of young referees for a return to competitive fencing.
Following the successful format previously employed for sabre referee training, the foil delegates were challenged with a theory exam before discussing recent senior international fight actions with EFC Commission Members, Martina Gannassin and Vilem Madr along with FIE Referee Florin Gheorghe.
Speaking about being a mentor Romanian referee, Gheorghe, who refereed all of the foil finals at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games said, “It is really lovely to assist these young referees in understanding not only the rules but also the modern conventions for phrasing hits. I hope that our support helps to develop referees that will go on to have successful careers in the sport that we love.”
Czech Madr, who also refereed medal matches at the Rio Games, added, “This is a fantastic initiative from the EFC and I’m very happy to be involved. It has been a difficult year for everyone. So, to be able to do something positive, such as training our young referees, is a great use of this time without competitive events.”
This week’s foil seminars continue tomorrow with a third group starting their training next week.
