NORTH AMERICAN CADET FOIL GOLDEN LOCKOUT
World Championships 2021 Report – Day 5 Cadet Foil
Canada’s teenage sensation, Jessica Guo and Daniel Zhang of the USA claimed the women and men Cadet World Foil titles, respectively, today in Cairo.
In the women’s event, 15-year-old Jessica Guo, who claimed bronze in the Junior event yesterday, began by winning all of her first round matches. Dropping just nine points, meant the Canadian was ranked second for the elimination stages and wasn’t taken to double figures on route to the final, where she beat Russia’s Anastasia Beznosikova 15-9 to become World Champion. Maria Cojocari of Moldova shared the bronze medal position with the USA’s Alexandra Jing.
On the men’s side of the draw, 16-year-old Daniel Zhang, stormed through his first round, winning all of his fights and ranked sixth for the elimination phase. He was challenged in the quarterfinals by Canada’s Bogdan Hamilton but came through 15-12 before beating teammate Chase Emmer 15-9 to make the final. There he met Korea’s An Hyeonbhin, who had impressed himself throughout the day. Zhang dug deep and took the World title with a 15-11 victory. Emmer shared third place with Lee Seoungbin of Korea. Poland’s Szymon Pacholczyk was the only European fencer to make the top eight.
The Championships continues tomorrow with the Junior foil team events.
