Olympic Qualification – Budapest Grand Prix Women’s Epee Update
Qualification for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games continued this weekend in Budapest, Hungary for the Women’s Epee fencers.
With no team event at a Grand Prix event Russia and Poland remain in the automatic team qualifying places whilst Italy continue to lead the race for the additional European team place.
Anna Maria Popescu of Romania went to Budapest leading the individual race for the additional European places - out of reach from her rivals. Frances’s Coraline Vitalis held the second qualifying place ahead of the Grand Prix and despite going out in the round of 64 she managed to retain it. Marie-Florence Candassamy, also from France, made the round of 32 as did Ukraine’s Olena Kryvytska and both remain in contention. A superb win from Alexandre Louis Marie from France – her second podium result in a row – also brings her into the race.
Olympic qualification in Women’s Epee concludes on 20-22 March at the final World Cup. Currently the location for that event is yet to be determined.
