Olympic Qualification – Cairo Women’s Epee Update
Qualification for the women’s foil events at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games continued at the weekend in Cairo, Egypt.
Going into the event Russia, Italy and France occupied three of the four automatic qualification places along with the USA, whilst Poland provisionally held the additional team place for Europe.
Italy won the team event in Cairo, beating Russia in the final as France beat the USA in the bronze medal match. So these three European teams maintain their places in the automatic qualification zone. Elsewhere, Germany beat Poland in the round of sixteen whilst Hungary also progressed to the quarterfinals. However, Poland battled their way to ninth in the placings matches and thus retained their hold on the additional European team place. That said both Germany and Hungary trail Poland by just four points now meaning the race is still very much alive.
Despite going out in the round of 64, Leonie Ebert of Germany continues to lead the race for the two European individual places at Tokyo 2020 with Hungary’s Fanny Kreiss 35 points further behind, holding the second spot.
