Olympic Qualification

Doha, Qatar hosted fencing’s first Epee Grand Prix of the year at the weekend where qualification for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games continued for the Men’s Epeeists.

With no team event at a Grand Prix event France, Switzerland, Italy and Ukraine remained in the automatic team qualifying places.  Hungary continue to lead the race for the additional European team place and Ukraine held on to the place vacated with no African team currently qualified.

Going into the event Russia’s Sergey Bida led the race for the two additional European spots and by winning the Doha title Bida extended the gap over his rivals.  Poland’s Zawrotniak held the second qualifying spot but was knocked out in the preliminary elimination fights on Friday.  Meanwhile, Dutchman Bas Verwijlen made it through to the quarterfinals and claimed 36 points which was enough to overtake Zawrotniak.

In the chasing pack Israel’s Yuval Frielich made the round of 64 and Yulen Pereira of Spain made the 64.  One more good results could bring them back into play along with Zawrotniak.

There are three qualification events left to go before the special zonal qualifiers, namely the Vancouver World Cup (7-9 Feb), the Budapest Grand Prix (6-8 Mar) and the Buenos Aires World Cup World Cup (20-22 Mar).
