Olympic Qualification – Doha Grand Prix Women’s Epee Update
Qualification for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games continued this weekend in Doha, Qatar for the Women’s Epee fencers.
With no team event at a Grand Prix event Poland, Russia and Italy remain in the automatic team qualifying places whilst Estonia continue to lead the race for the additional European team place.
Anna Maria Popescu of Romania went to Qatar leading the individual race for the additional European places. She further extended that lead with a dominant gold medal winning performance in Doha. Frances’s Coraline Vitalis held the second qualifying place ahead of the Grand Prix and despite going out in the round of 64 she managed to retain it. Marie-Florence Candassamy, also from France, made the round of 32 and has closed to within 22 points of her teammate.
A third French fencer, Aurianne Mallo, made the quarterfinals and overtakes German’s Alexandre Ndolo in the European race but both remain considerably far behind.
We will next see the Women’s Epee fencers in action at the Barcelona World Cup, 7-9 February.
