Olympic Qualification – Montreal Men’s Sabre Update
Qualification for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games continued this weekend in Montreal, Canada for the Men’s sabre fencers.
With no team event at a Grand Prix event Hungary, Italy and Germany remained in the automatic team qualifying places whilst Russia continue to lead the race for the additional European team place.
Bolade Apithy of France went to Canada leading the race for the additional individual European places. He further extended that lead with a brilliant gold medal winning performance in Montreal. Georgia’s Sandro Bazadze was running in second place and he claimed the bronze medal at the Grand Prix thus extending his lead over the chasing pack.
Vincent Anstett and Tom Seitz of France are in the chasing pack but a considerable way back on points. However, with three World Cups to go, they are mathematically still in the race. As is Romania’s Tiberiu Dolniceanu but he was not present in Canada.
We will next see the Men’s sabre fencers in action at the Warsaw World Cup, 21-23 February.
