Olympic Qualification – St Maur Women’s Foil Update
Qualification for the women’s foil events at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games continued at the weekend in St Maur, France.
Going into the weekend the Russia, Italy and France occupied three of the four automatic qualification places along with the USA. Poland sat in the additional European team place but just four points ahead of both Germany and Hungary.
Russia won the event beating Italy in the final which means both teams have made gains on the rest of the field. Both France and the USA went out in the quarterfinals and ended up facing each other for fifth place. France won that match resulting in them overtaking the USA into third place. Hungary will be the happiest of the European teams though. They were the ones that knocked out France in the quarterfinal. Despite losing the bronze medal play-off with Japan, their performance means they have overtaken Poland and now hold the additional European team qualification place.
Ahead of the event Leonie Ebert of Germany led the race for the additional individual places and was followed by Hungary’s Fanny Kreiss. They both made the top 32 in St Maur and continue to hold the additional European places.
They next meet in Katowice, Poland at the World Cup in January.
