Olympic Qualification – Turin Grand Prix Men’s Foil Update
Turin, Italy hosted fencing’s first foil Grand Prix of the season at the weekend where qualification for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games continued for the men’s foilists.
With no team event at a Grand Prix event France and Italy remained in the automatic team qualifying places whilst Russia continue to hold the additional European team place.
Going into the event Great Britain’s Marcus Mepstead led the race for the two additional European individual spots. His eleventh-place finish was better than all of his European rivals chasing qualification through the individual route. Mepstead extends his lead to 22 points over second place man, Benjamin Kleibrink of Germany who made the round of 32. Kleibrink’s results was matched by his closest rival, Alexander Choupenitch but the Czech fencer sits nine points behind.
In the chasing pack Michael Siess of Poland and Spain’s Carlos Llavador are tied on 60 points, seven behind Choupentich. Richard Kruse of Great Britian is further back on 42 points.
There are two individual qualification events left to go before the special zonal qualifier in Madrid, namely the Cairo World Cup (21-23 Feb) and the Anaheim Grand Prix (13-15 Mar).
