Olympic Qualification – Turin Grand Prix Women’s Foil Update
Qualification for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games continued this weekend in Turin, Italy for the women’s foil fencers.
With no team event at a Grand Prix Russia, Italy and France remain in the automatic team qualifying places whilst Hungary continue to lead the race for the additional European team place.
Leonie Ebert of Germany went to Italy leading the individual race for the additional European places. She further extended that lead with a top 16 finish in Turin and now sits 42 points ahead of second place Maria Diaz of Spain who did not gain any points. Anne Sauer, also from Germany made the round of 64 and is now three points ahead of Diaz on 47 points. However, only one fencer from each country can qualify through the individual route. Therefore Sauer must overtake teammate Ebert to have any chance of competing at the Tokyo Games, unless Germany qualify via the team route.
So Diaz holds on to the second European individual place but her three nearest rivals are still within catching distance. Julia Walczyk from Poland is three points behind Diaz with Israel’s Nicole Pustilnik a further three back and Hanna Lyczbinska one and half behind the Israeli fencer.
There are two more individual qualifying events to go, namely the Kazan World Cup (21-23 Feb) and the Anaheim Grand Prix (13-15 Mar).
