Paris 2024: Day VIII
Competition
The eighth day of the Olympic Games in Paris brought thrilling action to the fencing piste as the women’s sabre team competition showcased intense rivalries and remarkable skill. In a day filled with surprises and stellar performances, Ukraine emerged victorious, claiming the gold medal, while Korea took silver, and Japan made history by winning their first-ever women’s fencing medal with a bronze.
Ukraine’s journey to the top was nothing short of inspiring. Spearheading the team was Olga Kharlan, a name synonymous with excellence in fencing. Kharlan, who first won an Olympic gold 16 years ago in Beijing at the tender age of 17, demonstrated her enduring prowess and leadership. Her remarkable achievement places her in the elite company of Italy’s Valentina Vezzali, as she becomes only the second woman to win Olympic fencing medals 16 years apart.
Kharlan was supported by a formidable lineup comprising Alina Komashchuk, Olena Kravatska, and Yuliia Bakastova. The Ukrainian team displayed impeccable coordination and determination, culminating in their well-deserved gold medal victory.
The Korean team, featuring Choi Sebin, Jeon Hayoung, Yoon Jisu, and Jeon Eunhye, delivered a strong performance throughout the competition, earning them the silver medal. Their tactical acumen and resilience were evident, especially in their significant win over France, the top-ranked team.
Japan’s team, consisting of Misaki Emura, Shihomi Fukushima, Risa Takashima, and Seri Ozaki, captured the bronze medal, marking an historic moment for Japanese fencing. This milestone victory not only highlights their growth in the sport but also sets a new precedent for future generations of Japanese fencers.
France, the reigning European champions and winners of three tournaments this season, faced a challenging day. The team, featuring Manon Apithy-Brunet, Sara Balzer, Cecilia Berder, and Sarah Noutcha, entered the competition with high expectations. However, they encountered a familiar adversary in Korea, who had previously defeated them in the finals of the Alger World Cup. Despite their valiant efforts, France fell to Korea once again, and later to Japan in the bronze medal match, finishing in fourth place.
Another notable moment was Japan’s victory over the strong Hungarian team, the reigning two-time world champions. This win propelled Japan into the bronze medal match, where they continued their impressive performance to secure their historic medal.
As we reflect on today’s exhilarating matches, we eagerly anticipate the final day of fencing at the Paris Olympics, which will feature the men’s foil team competition. The European fencing community remains hopeful for another day of outstanding performances and memorable moments.
