Hungary show promise but end with the silver medal against Russia
Today, Russia stormed to the European title in women’s team sabre event beating Hungary 45-34 in the final. The French team took bronze after a close 45-42 encounter with Italy.
Russia came through the bottom of the table with relative ease beating both Georgia and Germany before a tough match against Italy in the semi-finals. They beat the Italians 45-39 in a great match.
Top seeds France won the World Championships last season and have won four of the five World Cup events this season. They came into the event as strong favourites but the young Hungarian team proved to be tough opponents in the semi-final. Hungary progressed 45-40, demoting France to the bronze medal play off.
Russia were cool, calm and collected in the final, comfortably beating Hungary 45-34 to secure another gold medal in Germany.
The event continues tomorrow with the team competitions in women’s foil and men’s epee.
