RUSSIA WIN JUNIOR MEN’S TEAM EPEE TITLE WITH DOMINANT PERFORMANCE
Egor Lomaga Leaves Porec as double-gold Medalist
Ranked fourth for the event, the Russian team lined up with individual bronze medalist Dmitrii Shvelidze, Igor Ganin and individual champion Egor Lomaga with Artur Tolasov in reserve. They edged tight matches on the way to the podium, beating Switzerland 45-43, Spain 45-39 and number one seeds Hungary 45-41 to make the final.
There opponents were the number two seeds Italy who fielded Enrico Piatti, Davide Di Veroli and Giulio Gaetani with individual silver medalist Filippo Armaleo in reserve. There route to the final was more comfortable beating Azerbaijan 45-25, Austria 45-31 and France 38-24.
The Russians started the final in strong form, leading 15-8 after the opening three legs. Even at that early stage the Italians began to chase the match allowing the Russian fencers to pick them off. Russia led 30-17 with three legs to go. Di Veroli came on for Italy in the last leg 40-28 down again Shvelidze. Despite the Italian scoring nine hits in the final bout Russia took the victory 45-27 to claim the Men’s Team Epee European title.
The bronze medal went to the French team who beat Hungary 45-44 in the play-off match.
