Russian duo win Gold in Men’s Foil and Women’s Sabre
Another strong performance from the home team in Sochi today saw Russia take gold in both Men’s Foil and Women’s Sabre with Kirill Borodachev and Alina Mikhailova respectively.
Junior Men’s Foil
In the first men’s foil semi-final Davide Filippi of Italy took on Daniel Giacon of Netherlands. Fillipi was the first to find his rhythm and surged to an early lead. Giacon the first Dutch medallist of the championships so far fought back valiantly but Filippi was able to maintain his lead. The final score 15-10.
In the other semi-final, the home fencer Borodachev faced Wallerand Roger of France. The Russian fencer progressed to the final score of 15-10.
In an entertaining final Borachev faced Filippi in front of the home-team crowd. A tense final saw the two exchange points in the first period before Boarchev pulled ahead by a point leading into the first break 10 – 9. A change of tempo proved key for the Russian on his coaches advice and the match swung dramatically after the break finishing the match 15-10.

Junior Women’s Sabre
Alina Mikhailova of Russia reached the final by defeating Aylin Cakir of Turkey in her semi-final 15-11. In the second semi-final Lisa Gette of Germany was defeated by Liza Pusztai of Hungary 11-15, setting up a final between Russia and Hungary who between them have dominated the sabre events in the championship.
The final saw an impressive performance by Mikhailova defeat Pusztai in convincing fashion with a final score of 15-8.
