RUSSIAN FOILISTS BEAT FRANCE FOR THE EUROPEAN TEAM TITLE
Great Russian Performance in The Women’s Team Foil Event
Today, the Russian’s women’s foil team claimed the European title by beating France 45-32 in the final. Italy beat Germany 45-36 for the bronze medal.
The Russian’s followed up a bye through the first round with a comfortable 45-24 victory over Poland. From then on it was always going to be tough, such is the quality at the top of the women’s foil game. Russia faced an incredibly strong Italian team in the semi-final and the fight went to time with Russia winning 44-32. In the other half of the draw France and Germany made the semi-finals as expected but the French dominated that match, going on to win 45-28.
The final saw Russia easing to a 9-7 lead after three legs of the nine-leg match but opened that lead up to 27-22 after three more. The gold medal never looked in doubt as the Russia team claimed the title with a 45-32 victory.
The last day of the event tomorrow, features the team competitions in men’s sabre and women’s epee.
