World Championships 2021 Report – Day 2 Cadet Sabre

Romania’s Marco Sovar battled his way to the Men’s Cadet Sabre World title today in Cairo, Egypt. Day two was another good day for Europe with half of the medalist coming from the continent.

The start of Sovar’s day did not suggest that he would be on the podium, winning just three of his six first round fights. Ranked twenty-sixth going into the elimination rounds, he edged past Russia’s number seven seed, Tsypin 15-14, on his way to the semi-finals, where he beat Colby Harvey 15-10. The Romanian then edged a nervy final against Park Junseong, 15-13 to become World Champion. Arseniy Shelekhov of Russia shared third place with Harvey.

The USA’s Magda Skarbonkiewicz took claimed the Women’s Cadet Sabre crown by beating Russia’s Yulia Salabai 15-7 in the final. Zarifa Huseynova of Azerbaijan and Zoe Kim from the USA shared the bronze medal position.

The Championships continues tomorrow with the team sabre events.
