Team cadet competition begins with Two Gold for Hungary and One for Italy

The cadet team competitions began in Sochi on Monday with an impressive showing from Hungary winning gold in Women’s Epee and Men’s Sabre. The Italian team added to an impressive championship so far with Gold in Women’s Foil.

Cadet Women’s Epee Team

With a team featuring two of the finalists and a quarter finalist expectations were on Hungary to have a strong team performance and they didn’t disappoint however they faced a Russian side in the final who would have been disappointed in their individual performance and had a point to prove in front of a home crowd. In the end Hungary just edged the final 45-43 in a thoroughly entertaining spectacle.

Cadet Women’s Foil Team

This young Italian team set out with goals of emulating the likes of Vezalli and some of the most decorated fencers in Italian and world fencing. In the final, they faced an Russian side who wanted to hear their national anthem played for their team on home soil. Perhaps motivated by results in the individual which didn’t go their way the Italian’s seemed more determined to prove a point today and ended up convincing winners 45-36.

Cadet Men’s Sabre Team

 Russia, the number 1 seeded team after their impressive perforcmance in the individuals were over turned in the Semi Final by Italy in a thrilling match 45-43. Russia were then beaten by Romania in the 3rd pace play-off and Italy went on to a final against Hungary. Some fantastic dynamic footwork was on display in the final along along with impressive attacking skills from both sides. In the end Hungary were victorious by a narrow margin of 45-43 to claim yet another gold for their team.
