The results of this Weekend: The Marathon Foil of Paris
Competition
The Marathon Foil Cup was a success. The prestigious U14 and U17 tournament gathered hundreds of foil fencers from all over the world between 4 and 5 February. The competition, reserved for U14 is part of the EFC European Circuit, while the U17 tournament was an external one. The French organizing club CEP put on an extraordinary event at the Carpentier Hall in Paris. In both U14 competitions America came out with two golds. Among the U14 foil players the American LIU Joy Zhaoyia beat the Cypriot KOPYLTSOVA Elizaveta in the final. Third places went to the American MANIKTALA Prisha and the Italian PICCHI Elena. Among the U14 foil players, Qian Jason prevailed, in the semifinals, over the French BOUMAZA Mahel, then in the final over the Israeli KOREN Evyatar. Third place for the Chinese GAO Yi Xing, who managed to beat the home fencer in a very tense match.
A Look at the Past
The numbers of participation and the different nations present at tournaments of the U17 circuit are amazing and we have been able to see it from past competitions: starting from Riposta Cup, which saw almost 400 sabre fencers clash from 21 different nations. The event was attended by important sports and political institutional personalities: the Minister of Sport Eduard Novak, the President of the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee Mihai Covaliu and Ana Maria Popescu, multiple Olympic, world and European epee champion. The winners of the two categories were the Italian Francesco Pagano, second place for the host Cidu Casian and third places for Ottaviani Matteo and Yaman Furkan. The winner of the women’s sabre was the Hungarian Konyak Csenge, second the Romanian Covaliu Amalia, third the Hungarian Toth Nadin and the American Chin Sophia. Romania took first place in the men's team event, beating France, third place for Turkey. Among the women's sabre teams, the USA prevailed over Hungary. Bronze also here for Turkey.
Also, at Thessaloniki Eurocup U17 the numbers touched more than 220 participants both on the first and second day. On the first day, in the individual men's sabre competition, the number one of the European rankings: Maxim Perchuk, established himself by winning in the final over Doruk Erolcevik. On the third step of the podium went the Ukrainian Maxim Gula and Ygit Cetinkaya. In the women's team event on the other hand, 19 teams participated, but the team Ukraine 2, Ukraine 1 and Bulgaria won first, second and third place respectively. On the second and last day of the big event, the women's individual tournament and the men’s team tournamenttook place with the number of athletes reaching 220 participants again: 133 athletes from 17 countries. To win the individual female competition was the Israeli Mihal Sukurov, who got the better of fellow countrywoman Michal Cohen, third place for the Ukrainian Polina Sp yrydonova. On the other hand, 23 squads participated in the men's epee teams, but only the Ukraine 2 team managed to lift the cup, winning in the final with Ukraine 1. Excellent result also for Israel which took the third step.
The Palavesuvio in Naples hosted 166 female and 219 male athletes. On the first day of men's foil Peter Bruk won by beating compatriot Nickolas Rusadze 15-11 in the final. Third place went to another US athlete, Castor Kao and Singaporean foil fencer Keyon Loo. On the second day, the Italian won the gold medal, who got the better of the three Americans who placed respectively on the second and third step of the podium: Senic Adeline, Lung Katerina and Pevznec Viktoria.
La Marathon Foil Cup a été un succès. Le prestigieux tournoi U14 et U17 a réuni des centaines de fleurettistes du monde entier entre le 4 et le 5 février. La compétition, réservée aux U14 fait partie du circuit européen de l’EFC, tandis que la competition U17 était un tournoi externe. Le club organisateur Français CEP a organisé un événement extraordinaire à la salle Carpentier à Paris. Dans les deux compétitions U14, l’Amérique a remporté deux médailles d’or : parmi les fleurettistes U14 a gagné l’Américaine LIU Joy Zhaoyia sur la chypriote KOPYLTSOVA Elizaveta. Troisième place pour l’Américaine MANIKTALA Prisha et l’Italienne PICCHI Elena. Parmi les joueurs de fleuret U14, Qian Jason l’a emporté, qui s’est imposé en demi-finale d’abord sur le Français BOUMAZA Mahel, puis sur l’Israélien KOREN Evyatar. Troisième place pour le GAO chinois Yi Xing, qui a réussi à battre l’hôte dans un match très tendu.
