Russia beat Strong Rivals Italy for the last Women’s Title of the Championships

Number one seeds Russia stormed to gold here in Porec, Croatia today to claim the Women’s Team Foil title, beating Italy in the final.

The Russians lined up with Alexandra Sunduchkova, Anna Udovichenko and Elena Petrova with Angelina Kononova in reserve.  They eased their way to the final beating Romania 44-22 and Poland 45-16.

In the other half of the draw, number two seeds Italy boasted the individual gold and silver medalists as they fielded Martina Favaretto and Vittoria Ciampalini with Giulia Amore.  Claudia Memoli held the reserve place in their team.  They also had a fairly uncomplicated route to the gold medal match, beating Turkey 45-12 and Germany 45-35.

Despite Europe’s number one fencer in this discipline, Favaretto opening up a 5-2 lead for the Italians after the first match, the teams were all square at 13-13 with three legs complete.  The Russians brought on their reserve, Kononova for the fifth leg and she held Favaretto to 22-22.  The reserve had done her job and Petrova came back in the penultimate leg to hand over a 40-35 lead to her anchor Udovichenko.  Favaretto fenced the last leg for the Italian team and closed the gap up before the Russian worked out the right distance and ultimately eased the Russians to victory 45-40.

Germany beat Poland 45-24 to claim the bronze medal in this event.
