World Championships 2021 Report – Day 1 Junior Sabre

Russia’s Kirill Tyulyukov stormed to the Men’s Junior Sabre World title today in Cairo, Egypt, as European fencers dominated on day one of the Junior & Cadet World Championships.

Dropping just ten hits in the first round Tyulyukov was top seed for the elimination rounds and was only taken to double figures once on route to the semi-finals. There he beat Poland’s Szymon Hryciuk 15-5 before claiming the World title with a 15-6 victory over Bobirjon Rasulov of Uzbekistan. Egypt’s Adham Moataz pleased the home crowd by sharing the bronze medal position with Hryciuk.

Korea’s Jeon Hayoung claimed the Women’s Junior Sabre crown, narrowly beating Nisanur Erbil of Turkey 15-14 in the final. Again, European fencers were most prominent on the podium as Ukraine’s Valeriia Prochenko and Dariya Drozd of Russia shared bronze.

The Championships continues tomorrow with the Cadet sabre events.
